Rant - FOX NFL
I’m going to rant for a moment so bear with me.
I’m sitting in the living room enjoying a nice relaxing Sunday afternoon watching football. The game on Fox this week for my area was Rams @ Cowboys. The game has been pretty much one sided since halftime with the Cowboys in the lead. This is fine because the Cowboys are one of the teams I enjoy watching.
Well, right before the 4th quarter Fox decides to change over to the Packers @ Vikings game because the score is closer. This pisses me off. I don’t care if the Cowboys game is one sided, I wanted to watch it. If I didn’t I would have changed the channel to CBS for the AFC game or one of the Sunday Ticket channels on DirecTV, and I can’t finish watching the Cowboys game on Sunday Ticket because it’s blacked out since my local channel was originally showing the game.
Final word to FOX, don’t change over to a closer game, or at least unblock the Sunday Ticket channel so I can finish watching the game I started with.
Halo 3
Unless you’ve been living under a rock (or just aren’t into video games) you’ve probably heard that Halo 3 was released today. It looks to be an amazing game (my copy won’t be here until Thursday). 1up.com gave it a rating of 10 which is the higher score they give, saying “Halo 3 has enough content to keep you stuck to your controller for weeks…”

WordPress 2.3 - Blog Updated
Just finished updating the blog engine (WordPress) to 2.3 which was released today and I have to say I’m liking the new version a lot. The upgrade was super simple. Used the Wordpress Database Backup plugin to easily make a backup in case anything went wrong and I needed to restore. Then I downloaded my themes folder so I could upload it after the upgrade since I made edits to it and didn’t want to bother making the edits again. Next I deleted all of the blog files (yes on purpose) and uploaded the new version after editing the config.php file. Then I just ran the upgrade.php file which upgraded the database for me and I was finished. After uploading the theme and plugins everything was complete.

Gmail Mobile Updated
Looks like the online mobile version of Gmail has been updated to include check boxes next to each email. This is excellent as it allows you to quickly delete emails or report any spam that made its way through without having to open each individual email. Take a look at http://m.gmail.com with your mobile phone or pda.
Mobile Viewing
The blog is now easily viewable on a mobile phone/pda thanks to the WordPress PDA plugin. Just head to http://blog.jtallison.com on your phone and it’ll automatically load.
Notre Dame Loses, 33-3 against Georgia Tech
Unfortunately the Fighting Irish lost today against Georgia Tech. I figured it would be tough for ND because of starting the season off with a new QB, but I didn’t think it would be a slaughter. Charlie Weis started the game off with Demetrius Jones and the Georgia Tech defense had no trouble stopping him, causing 3 turnovers. Hopefully they do better next week against Penn State.
Office Space as a Drama
This was done really well.
NBC says “You’re Fired” to Apple
Well it looks like NBC is choosing not to renew their contract with Apple that would allow NBC shows to be available through the iTunes store because Apple would not raise prices.
“We are disappointed to see NBC leave iTunes because we would not agree to their dramatic price increase,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “We hope they will change their minds and offer their TV shows to the tens of millions of iTunes customers.”
This is a shame because there are good shows from NBC like The Office, My Name is Earl, 30 Rock, and Chuck (really looking forward to this one) to name a few, and I was hoping to buy them off the iTunes store so I could keep an archive. I don’t want to have to keep them on my DVR just so I can show friends an episode. It’s much easier to buy them off of iTunes and keep them on a hard drive along with all my other archived material.
Update: NBC says they didn’t want prices raised.
Richmond Free Wireless
I recently installed two little white boxes on my network. This white boxes are for Richmond Free Wireless which is a community driven wifi network that plans to cover the entire Richmond area with WiFi providing free internet access to everyone. What’s nice about these units is basically all you do is plug it into an internet connection. There’s hardly any work for the end user. What’s also awesome about them is that not all units need internet access. For every ten units, only one needs to be physically connected to the internet. The others act as nodes and repeat the signal of the gateway.
Right now I have one unit inside connected to my network, and one unit out in my garage acting as a repeater with a 9dBi antenna attached to it to spread the signal even further. If you can, please help out RFW by hosting a repeater or gateway. You can see pictures of the two units here. They take up almost no space at all.
Mozilla Firefox Update
Mozilla released a new version of the Firefox browser today. The update fixes two flaws recently found in the browser, 1 critical and 1 moderate.
- MFSA 2007-27 Unescaped URIs passed to external programs
- MFSA 2007-26 Privilege escalation through chrome-loaded about:blank windows
You can download the update here, or in Firefox go to Help > Check for update.
